John (he/his) is a yoga guide from Phoenix, Arizona. After 8 years of active service in the U.S. Marines and 3 knee surgeries, his yoga practice helped restore his strength and mobility – and helped to calm him down.
With VA sponsorship, he completed formal yoga and small group fitness training at YogaFit, AFPA, CorePower Yoga, SCW, Ashtanga Primary, and formal instruction in Yoga and the Healing Sciences at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
He taught an eclectic Hatha style of yoga full time for 5 years at a variety of fitness, corporate, and yoga studio spaces in South Bend, Indiana, including 6 semesters of formal academic yoga instruction at Indiana University in South Bend and at the University of Notre Dame.
Having lived in Asheville for 4+ years, he most recently combined yoga and wilderness guiding with Red Oak Recovery, Namaste in Nature, and Just Be Tours. He is currently Adjunct Professor of Yoga at AB Tech. He has weekly classes with Asheville Yoga Center and the Asheville Police Department, and monthly classes with Asheville Fit Tribe.
John believes in the universality of yoga. Through yoga, anyone can improve their strength, flexibility, & mental calm. All that is needed is time and space to do it, some will power to consistently show up – & a knowledgeable guide.
John’s commitment to yoga practice has assisted his journey into health, minimalism, beauty & spirituality. Believing that a healthy mind & body are the most abundant form of wealth, he hopes to bring whole-body enrichment to the lives of others through a persistent practice of yoga.
Out of the studio, you’ll likely find him out hiking somewhere beautiful, thumbing a musty volume, cooking up a storm, riding his bicycle, singing and playing one of his ukuleles, dancing, or drumming. He has two adult sons and 1 grandson.
